Day 5 | Kathmandu – Chitwan (167kms / 6-7hrs drive)
Today embark on a scenic 6 to 7 hours drive to Chitwan.
Chitwan is home to the Royal Chitwan National Park, established in 1973, which offers an exceptional
wildlife experience with its diverse plant and animal life. Situated at only 150m above sea level, Chitwan
experiences warm weather, becoming particularly steamy between March and June, with temperatures
potentially reaching 43°C in the shade.
For optimal wildlife viewing, the period from February to May, when the grass is short, is ideal.
However, the autumn months are also beautiful, offering views of the Himalayas. Winter, from
December to January, in Chitwan is pleasantly warmer than in Kathmandu. The monsoon season,
spanning July and August, brings heavy rainfall, swollen rivers, and lush vegetation. While the rain may
not be continuous, the humidity is pervasive during this time.
After lunch, you have the option to engage in wildlife activities for the rest of the day accompanied by a
naturist guide, or you can choose to go on a game drive. This safari experience will take place in an open
jeep, offering excellent opportunities to observe the animals. Our knowledgeable guide will assist in
spotting wildlife and will share interesting information about the local environment and the animals we
encounter. You'll also have a wonderful chance to capture some truly memorable moments with the
guidance of your naturist.

Your day promises a fascinating exploration of wildlife and local culture, beginning with a visit to the
Gharial Breeding Center. Established in 1978 with initial support from the Frankfurt Zoological Society,
the center plays a crucial role in conserving the endangered gharial, a unique fish-eating crocodile. Their
method involves collecting eggs from the wild and hatching them in a protected environment,
significantly improving survival rates compared to the less than two percent in the wild, where
predators and human activities pose threats.
Next, head to Tharu village, this village offers a genuine glimpse into the daily lives of the Tharu people,
with its simple mud and reed huts reflecting their traditional way of living and working. You'll see
domestic and farm animals around the village, adding to its rustic atmosphere. The small village
museum houses traditional tools and clothing used by the Tharu people in their agricultural activities,
providing a deeper understanding of their heritage.
Later, you can unwind with a peaceful canoe ride on the Rapti River. As you gently float along, keep an
eye out for crocodiles and other reptiles basking on the riverbanks, as well as the elegant Ibises and
other waterfowl that frequent the area. (Please note that canoe ride is available from October to mid-
March, when the Rapti River's water level is optima).
As evening approaches, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy a vibrant Tharu Stick Dance performance.
Feel free to join the local boys and girls as they move to the traditional rhythms.
